Cellphone Providers
Generally speaking, Telstra is the Singtel of Tassie: The widest coverage with the highest prices. In second place, is Optus. Vodafone would round out the triumvirate, but honestly speaking, its coverage is so horrible that it’s not really worth it despite the low prices. Optus is passable for your first three years, given that you’re unlikely to be spending much time outside of Hobart. However, you will encounter situations where its coverage might fail you when you least expect it.
Personally, I’ve been using Telstra for about a year and a half now. I’ve traveled up and down the Midland highway, and it hasn’t failed me yet.
In the end, it’s all about how much you’re willing to pay. Check out the various offers when you get in, and work out which gives you the best coverage for the price you’re willing to pay.
There are other cellphone providers who piggy-back or resale coverage on the various networks. Just be aware whose network they’re using. If you can find a cheap way to get onto Telstra’s network, do let me know.*
*You can now access the whole Telstra 3G network through mobile reseller Boost Mobile. (5/6/13)
