Culinary Styles of Tassie
There are a fair number of restaurants in the Hobart city, Sandy Bay and North Hobart areas. There is a good variety of food, ranging from your standard western fare of fish and chips or steaks, to Japanese, Thai, Indian, Vietnamese, and even a number of Singaporean/Malaysian restaurants to give you that taste of home when you need it. There’s even bubble tea if you know where to find it.
The major supermarkets are Woolworths and Coles. There is a Woolies near the Menzies, as well as one in Sandy Bay. There’s a Coles in Sandy Bay as well. Sandy Bay has two Asian grocers: Wing & Co and Sandy Bay Mart, a Korean grocery store.
The Salamanca Market on Saturday is mostly a tourist trap, but they do have farmers selling fruits and veges. If you have a car, Island Market near Moonah sells groceries as well, and there’s a Chinese Emporium nearby.
In terms of prices, most meals, other than fast food, will set you back more than 10AUD. This is regardless of whether you’re eating Chinese takeaway or sitting down at Burger Got Soul. However, before long, you won’t even notice that that delicious plate of nasi goreng is setting you back 11AUD.
For economical meals, med students have access to the RHH cafeteria. Your basic mushed meat will probably set you back about 4AUD, while slightly better dishes can go up to 6 or 7AUD. Don’t worry, it tastes better than it looks. The hospital provides free tea, coffee, and milk as well. Decent enough to keep a med student functioning at all hours of the day and night. If you’re staying up at Accommodation Services, Pepperz serves cheap lunches and dinners as well.
