Tasmania: Australia's Island State
Tasmania is an island off the eastern coast of Australia across the Bass strait; an hour-fifteen minute flight from Melbourne. It is 89 times the size of Singapore. It has a population of about half a million people, almost half of whom reside in Hobart city.1 Much of Tassie remains unspoiled, and is a beautiful place to get away from the hustle and bustle of city life. Most areas still enjoy the amenities and comforts of modern living. Most of this article will focus on Hobart.
Most domestic airlines have flights from major Australian cities to either Hobart or Launceston airports. Most people travel from either Melbourne or Sydney, and flights take either an hour fifteen minutes, or two hours respectively. There’s a ferry, the Spirit of Tasmania, which departs from Melbourne and travels to Devonport in the North. It takes twelve hours.
